FAQ
-
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant that provides £7,500 toward the cost of installing an air source heat pump (ASHP).
-
How do I apply for the BUS grant? To apply, you must: Install an MCS-certified heat pump system Have an EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations Submit an application through an MCS-certified installer (we handle this for you!)
-
Can I claim the BUS grant if I already installed a heat pump? No, the grant must be applied for before installation through a registered installer.
-
What is a site survey, and do I need one?A site survey assesses your property’s suitability for solar PV or a heat pump. It includes: Shading analysis (for solar PV) Heat loss calculations (for heat pumps) Best location for inverters, batteries, or heat pump units
-
What is an EPC, and why do I need one for a heat pump?An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rates your property’s energy efficiency. A pre-install EPC is required to apply for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). A post-install EPC may be needed to claim the grant.
-
What is included in a solar PV or heat pump schematic?A schematic is a technical drawing showing: Wiring diagrams for the system Component locations & grid connections Compliance with MCS & DNO requirements
-
What is a structural report, and do I need one for solar PV?A structural report assesses whether your roof can support solar panels. Some DNOs & MCS regulations requirea structural assessment before approval.
-
What does your renewable consultancy service cover? We provide expert guidance, system design, paperwork support, and DNO approvals for: Solar PV & battery storage Air source heat pumps (ASHP) Full compliance paperwork for MCS, Ofgem & government incentives Large-scale commercial renewable projects
-
Who would benefit from your consultancy service?Solar & heat pump installers who need help with DNO paperwork & MCS compliance Homeowners & businesses looking for the best renewable system options Developers & contractors needing expert guidance on grid applications & compliance
-
What does a solar PV or heat pump design include? Our designs ensure optimal system performance and include: System layout & panel positioning (for PV) Heat loss calculations (for heat pumps) Inverter, battery & system efficiency recommendations Connection & compliance with DNO & MCS standards
-
Can you design a system before I install it?Yes! We provide pre-installation designs to help you understand: How much energy the system will generate Potential savings & payback period Compliance with MCS & DNO requirements
-
How do I know if a heat pump is suitable for my property? We conduct heat loss calculations to determine if a heat pump can efficiently heat your home. Older homes may require insulation upgrades before installation.
-
What is a DNO application, and why do I need one?A DNO (Distribution Network Operator) application is required when connecting renewable energy systems such as solar PV and heat pumps to the UK’s electrical grid. It ensures that the system meets safety and network capacity regulations.
-
What’s the difference between a G98 and a G99 application?G98: Covers small-scale microgeneration (e.g., solar PV systems up to 3.68kW per phase or 11.04kW three-phase). This is a fast-track approval process. G99: Required for larger installations (above 3.68kW per phase) and involves a more detailed engineering assessment by the DNO.
-
How long does a DNO application take to process? The processing time varies depending on the DNO and application type: G98 notifications (post-install) are typically processed within 10-15 working days. G99 applications can take up to 45 working days due to engineering review
-
Can I submit a DNO application myself?Yes, but it’s a technical and time-consuming process. We handle all paperwork, design requirements, and communication with the DNO to ensure smooth approval.
-
What is an MCS handover pack, and why is it important? An MCS handover pack is a mandatory compliance document required for all MCS-certified solar PV and heat pump installations. It includes: Risk Assessment & Method Statement Location of Components & Schematic Diagram MCS Certificate & Building Regulations Compliance Insurance-Backed Guarantee & Workmanship Warranty G98/G99 Application & Commissioning Details
-
When do I need an MCS handover pack?Every MCS-certified installation requires a handover pack to comply with UK regulations and for customers to claim government incentives (like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for heat pumps).
-
Can you provide handover packs if my installer hasn’t?Yes! If your installer hasn’t provided a compliant handover pack, we can create a full MCS-compliant pack based on your system details.
